Jean Matray
Jean studied metals intensively at Revere Academy in San Francisco. Jean makes jewelry that is playful and incorporates movement. She is a state-juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen.
Kerstin Nichols
Kerstin was the Featured Artist for the League's 2008 Traveling Exhibition. Her work can be found in the permanent collection of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in NYC. She has taught metal-smithing for over 25 years & has directed the Metals program at the Hanover League's Craftstudies program since 1991.
Casey Pike
Casey finds nature to be her inspiration since she moved to Northern NH four years ago from NYC where she was born and raised. She finds comfort in the asymmetry and the vagaries of the natural world. She attempts to surpass fads and embrace a combination of hip and classic looks that can be embraced over time.
Joy Raskin
Joy was accepted into the League of NH Craftsmen while in high school. She received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design & a MFA from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. |

Jeff Brown
Jeff grew up in North Carolina where he was introduced to clay in high school. He worked in a production pottery studio for seventeen years. Jeff incorporates hand-building techniques into his wheel thrown work. Jeff is a juried member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, as well as a past President of the New Hampshire Potter's Guild.

Tim Christensen
Tim is a potter living in Roque Bluffs, Me. He has shown in many regional and national shows, including CraftBoston and the Smithsonian. His distinctive black and white sgraffito drawings and graceful forms often depict natural scenes, and the animals and plants residing in his back yard. He has been working in clay for 10 years.

Alison Dodd
Alison is a state juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen & a local artist who has worked with clay for over 20 years. She received her BFA from Plymouth State University. Alison has found herself in the clay studio more than she imagined since she has begun teaching at the Littleton Studio School & is very excited to be sharing her knowledge and expertise with others.
Lilias Ide
Lilias received her BFA at Alfred University. She throws and hand-builds functional and non-functional work, but prefers to concentrate on hand-built sculpture. She has shown and sold her work across the United States. Presently, she is the Clay Studio Coordinator at the Littleton Studio School.
Maureen Mills
Maureen took her first ceramics class while completing a BA in Chemistry & immediately knew she would always have clay in her life. In 1987 she received her Masters Degree and has been a potter since. She is a former board member and juried member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and is also on the Board of Studio Potter Magazine. She is currently chair of the ceramics department at the NH Institute of Art in Manchester. She produces slip decorated work for a community wood firing in Massachusetts. Maureen is the author of "Surface Design for Ceramics."

Stephanie received her BFA from the Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford. She is currently a ceramics & art teacher at Woodsville High School. She works on the wheel & hand-builds to achieve textured functional pieces.

Otto Heino

Otto will visit the Littleton Gallery and Studio School on Thursday, May 14th.
At 94, Otto is still an active potter at his studio in Ojai, CA. A member of the League since the 1940's, Otto has been an enthusiastic supporter of craft education (he got his own start in pottery through a League class), and particularly of our efforts to get the Littleton Studio School underway. He donated a pottery wheel from his own studio and we are very proud to have him here to demonstate it
in person.

Jane Balshaw
Textile Artist/Colorist
Jane is a state juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen and is known for her use of color and unique design sense in her quilted textile art. She brings a life long love of sewing and an education in Interior & Fashion Design, emphasizing studies in Color Theory. She is a fourth generation artist.
The Triadic Color Theory System©, is a method she uses extensively in the creation of her textile art and has taught to artists, quilters and cosmetologists alike.

Carolyn Buttolph
Rug Hooking
Carolyn is a juried member of two fine crafts galleries in Vermont, studied art at Middlebury College and the Rhode Island School of Design. Her pictorial work combines a narrative quality and a strong interest in color. She participates in the internationally recognized annual hooked rug exhibition at the Shelburne Museum
in Vermont, and is a member of the Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild and the Northeast Kingdom Rug Hooking Guild.

Lynn has a BA in Art History and a Masters in Education. She has been teaching creativity to children and adults in New Hampshire for many years. She has been learning about and melting glass for 15 years. She received Kay Eastman Scholarship to study hot glass in Portland, Oregon. She has also studied glass at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine.

Carol has been making baskets for over 20 years. She is passionate about basket making and sharing her skills. Carol has taught all over the country and is the owner of the Basket Weaver shop in Lisbon, NH.

Ray has Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees. He has lectured/demonstrated in seven states and two provinces; including demonstrations for the Hood Museum and the Martha Stewart Living TV show. He has painted sumi-e since 1980 and is a state juried member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen for paper making.

Soldering Basics

Joy will teach the basics of silver soldering and how to use a torch. Students will start by learning how to put together and use a basic soldering torch setup. Students will learn the various types of solder and brazing rods used in jewelry making. Students will learn a variety of soldering joints, how to use jigs for difficult joints, the basics of flux, tools and much more will all be covered. If you want to learn how to solder, use a torch, or brush up your skills; this is the workshop for you.

Soldering Chains

Joy helps students explore the flexible art of chain-making. Students will solder links to create dazzling chains. Chain styles include basic cable chain with variations, twisted link chains, linking chains, simple loop in loop chains, and more. Tips on soldering large rings with glass or gem beads right on the rings will be given. This workshop is great for learning assembly line soldering. Copper, brass and sterling wire and some sheet will be provided.

Bezel Making

Casey will instruct students on the fabrication of a sterling silver and copper semi-precious stone pendant. Students will learn sawing, filing, bezel making, stone setting and finishing processes to create a pendant of their own design. A variety of stones will be available for purchase from the instructor. Students are encouraged to bring design ideas to class.
No previous experience necessary.

Making Simple Metal Beads

Kerstin teaches students how to take the "flat" out of sheet metal using interesting and simple ways to add dimension to their jewelry. Working in copper, students will use techniques such as embossing & decorative punching to add custom textures. Learn to dome & solder (or cold connect) the pieces together to complete personalized beads.
No previous experience necessary.

Wire Chains

Joy teaches students how to make chains using just wire, a few hand tools, and imagination. Chain styles include Egyptian spiral, Viking (knitted), wire-wrapped links with beads, and basic links. Using 14g. to 26g. round wire, students will wrap, bend, knit, hammer, spiral their way to make samples and a final complete chain; ready to be worn.
No previous experience necessary.

Spoons

Joy will show students that making their own spoon is fun and easier than you may think. Using thick wire & sheet metal, students will cut out a round or oval disc & dome it to make a spoon bowl. Either a wire or sheet metal handle will be created to solder to the spoon bowl. Brass, copper & sterling sheet and wire will be provided for purchase. No previous experience necessary.

Jean teaches the fundamentals of metalsmithing in this class. It focuses on soldering, sawing, piercing, forming, filing, fitting & texturing metal using stamps & hammers. Students will learn various techniques for finishing metalwork, manually & using a flex shaft. These techniques will be applied to specific jewelry projects. Metal-shop safety will be discussed.

Guided Open Session

Jean meets weekly with students to work independently on their projects. She will work with students individually on design & technical issues. New topics of interest will be suggested for the group to learn as a whole, including bezel setting, complex soldering, hinges, moving parts, cold connections & etching. The group will select topics they would like to explore together. Students are encouraged to discuss projects and learn from one another as well as from the instructor.
Prerequisite: Jewelry I or equivalent

JEWELRY OPEN STUDIO
Dates & times: variable
This time is available for students to work on projects independently. A monitor will be available to over-see the studio & to answer questions. Students will be responsible for providing their own materials, but may utilize the tools, soldering materials, and finishing materials to work on your projects.
The prerequisite is that you must have had Jewelry I and one course of Guided Open Session. Dates and times are posted and available at the studio school. Additional Open Studio sessions may be scheduled depending on studio availability. Sign up for e-mail blasts to receive last minute information.

Throwing the Perfect Form

Tim will facilitate students' exploration of the fine points of perfecting forms. We will start throwing on the wheel while envisioning forms, progress to wet trimming on the wheel, then work with a rasp, card, and knife to finish and perfect our forms.
There will be discussions around form theory, history, and ample discussion of all things clay.

Burnin' Pots - A Raku Workshop

Jeff will guide students in glazing & firing Raku pottery and sculpture. He will provide a clear crackle glaze & two flashing copper luster glazes along with the recipes for these glazes. As the pieces become dry, the portable raku firing will begin and continue until all firings are complete. Bring the following to class: bisque fired pieces to be glazed and fired, your favorite glaze brushes, & the following protective clothing: work gloves, a hat &/or face shield, & long sleeve cotton top.

Paste Paper Workshop

Kristine will show students how 
to decorate paper with colorful
paste paints using a variety of tools. Paste papers can then be used for collage, book covers, boxes and much more.
In the first session, students will learn a variety of surface decoration techniques using paste paint to create a collection of beautiful papers. In the second session, students will use their papers to cover a Japanese sewn book, create origami boxes, make a document pouch and to cover a mini-sketchbook.

Lynn teaches students to create several glass sun-catchers by melting the brightly colored glass in a kiln. Cecily will teach children (and their parent) to manipulate a lump of clay into an enduring and useable keepsake. Michelangelo, watch out! Kids create their own art gallery in this seven week class inspired by the greats! We'll smile more than the Mona Lisa as we talk about well-known artists, their artwork, and their technique. Then we'll make our own artwork reflecting the works of Rembrandt, Seurat, Kandinsky, Munch, Van Gogh, and da Vinci, and follow it up with an art show so that parents and friends can see all that we did in the class and maybe even learn a little something themselves!!

In every class we'll discuss a different country, read a story about that place, and do an art project to represent it! We'll travel to Egypt to bring back ancient jewelry. A Kokeshi doll is a great "art"-ifact to bring from Japan. And though it's cold, Eskimos know how to laugh with this fun masking game. In Mexico we'll see the beautiful Huichol yarn art. We'll end our journey in India with the "eyes" of a peacock!

- Please sign up for classes early. We often need to let our instructors know a full week ahead whether we have the minimum of students to run the class.
- Full tuition is due at the time of registration.
- Failure to make full payment may result in the loss of your place in the class.
- A full refund less a $25 registration fee will be given if you withdraw from a class at least seven days prior to the first day. No refund will be given after that time.
- We reserve the right to cancel classes due to inadequate enrollment & other circumstances beyond our control.
